The New 2008 FAIL SAFE 3 has 3 one inch ridges on the crown of the club, measured dead center...this was tested against several other variations for performance characteristics...this one was best. The 'Scary Carry' as I call it does indeed come from the crown. If you design a "Low Modulus crown" which is effectively a thin crown you realize a benefit in ball traj and spin rate! If you make the same design with that effectually has some 'give' in any direction, you create the same Gear Effect. The FailSafe creates Vertical Gear Effect. It does this by allowing the Crown to Flex! Others companies are trying to strengthen the 'thin' crown! The bulges in effect although may weaken the crown - the flex bulges give the head 3 points of flex that also increase the launch angle and creates less spin for huge carry and dare I say it....pretty nice roll indeed! Even though the crown is weakened in this particular design it is a 'Good Thing'! YOU CAN CALL IT THE ACCORDIAN EFFECT! Now there is a point where the flex can be too much or not enough and that is why we made up several different flex points on several FS prototypes! The Power slots and Power bulge on both clubs is effective to strengthen the body and to 'tighten up', for lack of a better word, the metal at impact!
